The musicians shown are iconic not only because of their talents, but because they've labored hard to become rock and roll artists.
Similarly, these mosaics are as much about the process as they are about the outcome. Goldsmith selects one photograph that is then divided into a grid system created by the artist Chuck Close.
She scans over 2000 images from contact sheets that were made over a course of years in different settings. Working from upper left to lower right, she hand places them into the image and then uses photoshop to lighten and darken selected areas. It is important to note that The Rock Mosaic is not completed with a computer program, because for Goldsmith the process reflects the labor that goes into the making of art.
